The Orono Spartan Football team moved to 2-2 on the season with a heartbreaking 26-22 loss to the Chaska Hawks in Chaska last Friday. “Our guys played their hearts out and left everything on the field. This early in the season every loss is hard to take, but I saw our team come together and played better than we had all season.” Chaska moved to 4-0 on the season and are currently rated #7 in class 5A, one class above the Spartans.

The Spartan offensive attack was clicking on all cylinders against the tough Hawk defense. Running backs Bobby Striggow and Fisher Eiss ran the ball for nearly two-hundred yards, and Nick Prentice turned seven completions into 179 yards and kept the Chaska defense off-balance all-night long. “I think the key to our offensive performance was our ability to run when we wanted and pass when we thought they were cheating on the run. If it wouldn’t have been for a couple of tipped balls, we would have scored another touchdown or two in the game.” Bobby Striggow had his best night of the season running the ball. He carried it 19 times for 134 yards and all three of the Spartan touchdowns. He pounded the Hawk defense all night long. In a crucial play late in the game, Striggow ran a toss play for 8 yards converting a 4th and 7 into a first down. “Striggow was hit about three yards short of the first down, and willed his way for the final four yards. It was a classic will-to-win type of play.” On the night, Prentice’s favorite receiver was Zane Taylor who caught three passes for 112 yards. Caleb Olson, Jimmy Buck and Fisher Eiss also had catches on the night. Coach Fedie and the offensive staff selected offensive tackle Michael Delaney and receivers Zane Taylor, Braeden Christiansen, Jimmy Buck and Sam Perry as the top blockers of the game.

The Spartan defense got off to a rocky start in the game, but regrouped at halftime and shut out the Hawks until late in the fourth quarter. “They knocked us on our heels early, but our guys battled their tails off the rest of the game and kept the game within reach.” Bobby Striggow was also the star on defense, leading the team with 13 tackles and 35 defensive points. Danny Striggow, seven tackles and 21 defensive points, and Caleb Limesand, seven tackles and 21 defensive points both played strong games. Six other Spartans, Caleb Olson, Sam Wagner-Lund, Markus Anderson, John Ellis, Tommy Deters and Mitch Hirschberg each had over 10 defensive points as well. Tommy Deters also recovered a Chaska fumble.

The Spartans return home this week to play their annual TACKLE CANCER game against the Waconia Wildcats. Activities during the week and at the game will be raising money to donate to the Randy Shaver Cancer Research Fund. If you are coming to the game, bring a little extra cash, and help the Spartans in this noble effort. The game starts at 5:00 this week.
